Last Litter For A While

Ginny is not a female that I can palpate very well – If at all. Our sweet “Puff” is just that, and feeling walnut sized knots in her belly is nearly impossible. Her palpate day came and went with a few tries but all were unsuccessful. Confirming a pregnancy in Ginny has always taken a little longer of a wait since her second litter but when we approach the 30th day of her impending pregnancy, she pops or she doesn’t. Well guess what – We have reached that point and as if it happened over night – She popped! Not only has her belly bulges popped but her preggy sprawl and preggy sit have made their appearance too. Now it’s time to...

Bird Baby Watch

Since I am more accustom to larger puppies, more in the 3 to 4 ounce range, skinny-mini pups are the ones that require much more supervision. Colada’s pups are definitely what could be referred to as preemies, with their long and slender frames. I prefer the pudgy bellies and fat, stubby limbs and am looking forward to seeing these two gain that and then some! In their first 24 hours, they have attached and stayed attached for nursing. They have filled their bellies, helping reduce their ribby look and are actively crawling to mommy for feedings and for cuddles. It is rather common for pups to loose a bit a weight their first day and these two seriously have no...

And With The New Day

And With The New Day

…comes two new puppies! Just as I predicted, it was a very long night and morning but one that was well worth the ups and downs. After much resting, the pace kicked back into the down-and-dirty mode. From the moment her first puppy arrived and for the next hour and a half, Colada was out of the whelping box, mostly napping on my lap actually. I have never in my life had a laboring dog choose my lap for such comfort. Kinda sweet. She draped herself over my leg as if trying to have gravity help move the puppies move down. Periodically, she would roll over for a belly rub. When her contractions kicked in, you could visually see two puppy bulges, one on each side....

Another Long & Eventful Night

Another Long & Eventful Night

Colada and I retired to the whelping suite (our guest bedroom) around midnight, with the onset of the  panting, nervous pacing and heavy nesting. The heavy contractions began in the very early morn -  Like 2:30 am morn. I knew I would be in for a very long night when we saw a spot of dark green fluid. With Colada’s past litter being filled with the same fluids, I knew there was a very high chance for a dead puppy. She was not in distress and her contractions were quickly bringing the bulge to the birth canal. Within seconds, we had a puppy and my worst thoughts were proven true. The same “not quite cooked long enough” sack with a placenta cocoon...

Time For A Switcheroo

Time For A Switcheroo

Colada held back on breakfast and I can see that distant look in her eyes, telling me that the whelping is imminent. Since we are only at the very early beginnings, I see my night turning into my day before I know it. While the rest of the house sleeps, Colada and I will be waiting by nightlight for the puppies to enter the world. To help keep things calm and quite for all, I decided that Rane and her sweet baby girl needed to be taken out of the quiet, whelping suite and into my bedroom. I came in to find our sweetie in her new favorite position on her new favorite bed! You guessed it – The new plush dog bed. She now likes to cuddle up to the bolster and hang her...
