We Lost Her
No supplemental feedings or extra care was going to prevent the inevitable. So, so sad to announce that was lost our spotted sweetie this afternoon. Colada and her babies are doing well after their first full 12 hours in the world and in morning’s light, I can see much more clearly what we are dealing with. Her boy and her last female are nice and plumpy, doing great actually. Her first and third females are the ones who still have my attention. Her first girl, the spotted one, has lost the strength to nurse so I am supplementing her. She also is on the blue side, with what I would call wet breathing. She can’t seem to retain any body heat either. Even the heating pad can’t keep her warm. Heated water bottles, towels and feedings every two hours for the indefinite future. My first guess was right! Colada begged to go upstairs to the whelping suite around 8:30 pm tonight. All I could do was hope and pray she cooked um long enough. In addition to her non-textbook whelpings, she also has Stage Two habit that I really don’t know if it is more nerve-wracking on her or me. She goes into this major panic mode where she begs to be in my bedroom. Not just in my bedroom but in my BED! The last time, she started to pushed a puppy out on the floor in front of the door so tonight I was prepared for her nonstop door pacing and lined the area with pads and towels. Today is Colada’s day 58 meaning she can go into labor any time starting today with a viable litter. Puppies born before day 58 of the pregnancy will not survive. And when it comes to Colada, getting her closer to her actual due date is preferred. In the past, we have had what I would call “not quite finished cooking” puppies from her. Every litter has had an underdeveloped blob pup and then her last litter was what I refer to as “bird babies”. These are tiny, no ounce of fat, skinny mini pups that require extra attention and supplemental feelings to get them through the first couple weeks. Flirtini and Gateraid turned out beautiful...
