First, I cannot wait to share the fact that Hope is back to her birth weight! The gain since yesterday is minuscule, but it’s an important gain. She is  back to 3 7/8 ounces and I couldn’t be happier!

Oh wait! Yes I could. Hope’s belly is much, much better and no more poopy stoppage! Everything is flowing as it should and both the girls are really enjoying the stress free day they had today. A lot of cuddling and a lot of chillaxin’.

Hope and Suri - Day 5

I should also share that I have gone back to the tried and true homemade puppy formula. No more canned or pre made milk replacers. So many people swear by them, I am one who does not. This is not my first hand raised litter of puppies and not my first trip down Commercial Milk Replacer Lane. But it will be my last.

This is the recipe for the homemade milk replacer for puppies that I use:

10 oz. can of whole goat’s milk
1 raw egg yolk.
1 cup of plain yogurt (avoid skim or fat free if at all possible).
1/2 Tsp Karo Syrup
1 drop Pet-Tinic vitamins

Mix all of the ingredient with a wire whisk until blended. Keep the mixture refrigerated. Discard any remaining formula after 7 days. Warm the formula to body temperature before each feeding. (see my syringe feeding technique).

As I stated, for the first three days, puppies should be fed every 2 hours. For the remainder of the first week, they should be fed every 3 hours during the day with two 4-hour stretches at night. The second week, the feedings should be every 4 hours during the day with one 6-hour stretch during the night. By the third week, they should be started on puppy mush 3 times a day and the bottle feeding should be continued.

Depending on the weight of the puppy, you should divide the suggested daily intake into each feeding. I start the day with 1 cc per ounce and work from there to reach the daily goals.

1 to 3 ounce puppy – 15 cc daily

4 to 5 ounce puppy – 30 cc daily

6 to 7 ounce puppy – 45 cc daily

8 to 9 ounce puppy – 60 cc daily

10 to 11 ounce puppy – 80 cc daily

12 to 13 ounce puppy – 90 cc daily

14 to 15 ounce puppy – 105 cc daily

1 pound puppy – 120 cc daily

I also recommend that you have a tube of Bene-Bac on hand at all times. Not only is it very helpful with special needs and orphaned puppies but also when you adults or puppies are under stress, are on anti-biotics and when you being to wean puppies.
