So, do you remember my mention of a plan we had made, just in case The Smooch goes into labor this weekend? Well, we had to kick it into gear this morning as I think we were all a bit shocked. A  labor starting at 9 am in the morning? Not 3 am in the morning? Or at midnight, keeping you up all  night? ACTUALLY DURING BUSINESS HOURS? That’s unheard of!!!

Michele and Alexis packed up all of the entered dogs and headed on out to the Fairgrounds while Smoochie and I settled in, in the whelping/guest room. She progressed as normal, without issue and no real panting, only nesting. She like so many others, desperately wanted to be in my bed. I resorted to bringing one of our afghans into the room and letting her nest into it. That seemed to help get things progressing, until I witnessed not one, but two sacks protruding from The Smooch. I knew this wasn’t a good sign. You could see her pushing but nothing was progressing past that after she chewed them both open.

We were now closing in on 3pm and with her having been in “push mode” for close to 3 and a half hours, with no more progress, it was time to get into “c-section” mode. I packed her up and off to the closest vet we went.

After viewing the X-Rays, (the most AMAZING X-Rays I have ever seen by the way) and the confirmation that she had not dilated at all, it was time to perform the surgery. Since it was most likely that this would happen in the future as well, I also opted to have her spayed who on the table. I knew that if the puppies were to survive and Smoochie had to nurse them (She has a ton of milk already!) that the spay could cause issues, but I opted to go that route instead of having to have her go under again for such a major surgery.

Out in the waiting room I sat anticipating the worst but praying for the best. The receptionist kept going back an forth, giving me the play-by-play.

White one…

Black one too…

The white one is doing great! …Was the stuck pup … Already screamed…

Black is is smaller … Is still being worked on. Is struggling…

Two boys…

And then the next thing I know, I am being handed two bundles of puppy love and both are pink and healthy and doing well! I got to love on them while we waited for Smoochie to come to. It didn’t take long, as she was handed to me an hour after we walked in the door and she was back in that whelping box with her babies 30 minutes after that.

She has immediately taken to her boys, being loopy and all! She is seriously doing  such a fabulous job.  Our white boy is a porker, weighing in at 5 ounces! He’s not exceptionally large, just fat with a very round head. Our second boy is a black tri color like his daddy and is not as plump but still doing very well. And ounce and a half smaller than his brother, I think he wi be catching up quickly!   I cannot wait to watch Smoochie and her babies grow and bond. She loves them already – That’s very obvious!
