When Tracy and and her daughter Hope made our baby Izzy the newest member of their family, we knew they were a dream forever family. We had been through so much with Izzy and her place in our heart required a very special family for us to feel comfortable letting her leave. So when Tracy contacted me saying they were looking to add another Chihuahua to their crew, I knew yet again, I had the perfect choice for them.

Suri is a very sweet and special girl in our family. When it comes to temperament, if I could clone her a gazillion times I would still have people lining up at our door for more. Seriously, if she sweet eyes don’t suck you in, her endless, unconditional love will make you hooked on this breed. Everyone that meets her falls madly, deeply in love with her and we have had a lot of people show interest in adding her to their family.

Thing is, we knew it had to be an extra special family that we knew would remain in contact with us and also give her the life of a princess, something she most definitely deserved.

When I told Tracy about Suri, it was a perfect fit so she and her daughter came by to pick her up and make it official. Of course, Hope just HAD to meet baby Hope. Clearly Suri’s baby got her amazing temperament too because that sweet puppy stole more hearts tonight, that’s for sure!
The post Sweet Suri to be Spoiled Rotten first appeared on Figgy's Chihuahuas AKC Show Breeder/Handler in Florida.

With toes and fingers crossed for hours, our worst outcome has come to life. Not only did we not see any progress after two hours but we went up to four, allowing her “first time” time to push the puppy down.

Suri was such a trooper and never once went into distress. Tail wagging and kiss giving for the entire time, our sweetie calmly made the journey to the vet for a c-section. The x-rays showed the puppy hadn’t moved a millimeter and was clearly not going to make it into the birth canal. X-Rays always make puppies look much larger than they really are, but the worry was still there, that we had a monster puppy in there. Once the blood work result were in, the surgery itself didn’t take long and within 10 minutes, out they came out with our single puppy.

The first words spoken were “We recommend mom being spayed“. My heart sank! Of course, Suri’s health and the health of any of her offspring is first and foremost. When she went in for surgery, I explained her known faults as well as her amazing benefits to our program. That unless something horrible was seen while in there, that I preferred to keep her intact. The next words were spoken as the technician handed me Suri’s sweet baby – “She has a cleft palate. Do you want to have her euthanized?”

This was that “horrible” thing that we discussed in making the decision to have Suri spayed. My heart ached as I said to go ahead with the surgery. But the puppy? I needed to talk to Doc about that one. It was too late in the evening to consult my mentors and as the puppy screamed and wiggled in the towel in my hands, I knew I had to follow my gut on this one. She was a fighter, a healthy, plump fighter! Nowhere near as large as our imaginations had pictured – Maybe 4 ounces? After I noticed that she was able to suckle on my finger tip, I thought perhaps she had a chance. Doc confirmed it, saying that if she can suckle, she may only have a cleft lip. Also, that if she makes it to day 3, she really has a very good chance of making a very special pet. If she has even an ounce of her parent’s temperaments, she will be the most amazing girl ever! And with that, the decision was made – We are going to fight for her. She’s coming home!
The post Nothing Left To Cross first appeared on Figgy's Chihuahuas AKC Show Breeder/Handler in Florida.

Today was my scheduled vet appointment to get the girls their first set of vaccines and to get Suri’s day 61 pregnancy x-rays. when I woke to both KC and Kiki having wobbly-head, I knew they still were not adjusting well to the weaning process. Vaccines were out! There is no way they are strong enough to deal with vaccines! But a stool check and some blood work were on order and the results were exactly what we all guessed – Bacterial from the soft stools from the change in diet. Antibiotics were prescribed and every 4 hour feeds are in my future for the next couple of weeks.

I have had my fingers crossed for Suri that the Ted-Man’s multiple ties would help produce at least two puppies. She is only a sliver under 5 pounds and her pregnancy weight gain has been rather small. Two small puppies would be less dangerous and a LOT easier than one larger puppy! Unfortunately, I guess I should have had my toes crossed too because she only has one puppy brewing. It’s not single-puppy big but not a tiny one either. We are all saying prayers that her pelvis will allow the pup to be free whelped. It’s going to be a very tight fit!
The post Gonna Be An Interesting Week first appeared on Figgy's Chihuahuas AKC Show Breeder/Handler in Florida.

Today is Suri’s 58th day of her pregnancy and so now we wait for her puppies to arrive. Any time now, she can start the process but until then, we have some plans set to help make their entrance into the world a bit easier. She is not that big but she has something in there for sure. I am thinking two small puppies or three tiny ones.

With this being Suri’s first litter of puppies, I have scheduled a visit to see Doc and to get a pregnancy x-ray, so that we have a clearer idea of how many she has in there and if she can free whelp them. The size of the pups and their heads will play a big part in how they enter the world – Let’s just hope she holds out until Friday. Our appointment is set for Thursday afternoon.
The post On Whelp Patrol first appeared on Figgy's Chihuahuas AKC Show Breeder/Handler in Florida.
