Tropical Storm Emily

Thanks to the storm today, Blue has learned a major lesson about being a straggler when it comes to getting back into the house. She is one that likes to explore and dig in the dirt under the deck. Blue is on the reclusive side and this can unfortunately make us “forget” about her sometimes. She is usually hidden under a blanket, behind the couch in her special bed under the coffee table, or in our “always open” crate in the laundry room.

Today we let all the dogs run outside to potty between squalls of rain. Blue did her thing but unfortunately she didn’t catch the sign that the other dogs were coming inside because it started POURING RAIN!!!! Admittedly, I didn’t count everyone when they ran in. Usually when it rains they won’t even go outside and would most definitely not wish to remain outside. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought one of them stayed outside.

So 30 minutes AFTER I ran the dogs I saw a moving shadow in the back window off the deck inspiring me to turn on the porch light. There was Blue, completely drenched and sitting by the door, patiently waiting to be let in. Once I opened the door, she ran right over to her specially claimed bed. You can actually see the wet paw prints from her jaunt to her spot! I grabbed a towel for her to cuddle and dry off in. That’s exactly what she did too!

The Storm Cuddle

This summer has been exceptionally filled with afternoon thunder storms – We have seen quite a few severe storms this year! Our summer dogs (those born in the summer/spring months) are handling it fine. It’s the winter dogs that are having a pretty hard time. Breezy, Dude, Cosmo, and Blue are the worst! They can sense the storms off in the distance and alert us to their approach sometimes an hour before they arrive! Cowering in blankets or on the back of the couch, whining and whimpering, with some of them following our every step as if we can stop the madness! Poor things! Cosmo is on high alert this afternoon while Dewey is simply taking advantage and using his body heat!

Now I have to say that our newest litter of puppies are lucky to have been born this summer! They will be accustom to the thunder booms- You’re welcome future Figgy Chihuahua Puppy Families!

Anything For Food

Today we did a bit of bait training in the backyard. I have found that the RedBarn Beef Roll does WONDERS in keeping their attention and making them want more. Here I was using it as a topper put on weight! I didn’t realize I had such a Goldmine!

Georgie and TIno did fabulous with their training, each remaining focused on me for the majoring of their training. Now when it was time to do the girls everything changed – and I couldn’t help but laugh!

I wanted to work with Stella one-on-one but she was not going to have it. She just wanted the food – Eating my entire stash! I sent my husband into the house to bring me back out some bait and that is when Blue snuck out into the backyard with him. Apparently having competition helped Stella focus on me and what we were trying to train her on. But that also meant when we decided it was time to treat the girls Blue was working her way into finding a chance to get more food! Pawing at the sandwich bag filled with bait was all it took. Bait went EVERYWHERE! We scrambled to pick it up so the girls didn’t eat at all. Clearly there were remnants because they decided to roll in them! Now we have two girls this smell like beef!

She’s At It Again

When you are the same color as the furniture you lay on, you get lost. Blue crawls under the blankets on our couch and sleeps the day away. She’s a burrower, big time! And she gets sat on more than any other dog in our home. We advise anyone about to sit on our couch to “check for Blue”. Today I checked and was greeted with her tail beating again the couch with her very happy to see me tail wag. Another save!

Find Blue

Ever since Blue was the puppy she has seeked out blankets to hide and sleep under. No matter what time of the day you must always lift up blankets on the couch to make sure when you sit down you are sitting on Blue. She’s getting up there in age now, turning 9 in May. The older she gets the more and more she naps. Kinda like me !

Today someone threw the comforters on the back of the couch and clearly Blue claimed it as around. The comforter is surprisingly the same shade of gray as she is without the flash of the camera. It took me a minute to realize she was in there! Again, always on the lookout for Blue.

Adjusting To The New Schedule

Alexis has been working now for two months and her heart dog Blue has had a bit of a time adjusting to the new schedule. From the moment she walks out the door in the morning to the second she is in the drive way after getting home after work, Blue sits and looks out the big picture window waiting for her. And once she does get home, they spend the next 20 minutes playing in the back yard. Blistering heat or not, every work day that’s what they do. The reward for the painful wait.

And So They Wait

Every time I head out to take Alexis to or pick he up from work, these three amigos have to be placed into the front family room. If they aren’t in the front room they have special little Chihuahua meltdowns. This usually includes howling, a lot of jumping up and down and banging into the doggy gates. Our “Special” ones have tad bit of anxiety from over spoilage. So in the front room, cuddled up on the couch and able to see when we I all back into the driveway. Problem solved!

Always A Yard Guard

Since Blue was a puppy, she has been a yard guard. That means a dog that she uses all of her senses to guard our back yard from other dogs on the other side of fence, or leaves that blow or humans walking a quarter mile away! She is on high alert from the moment she steps out of the house right until she runs back in to nap in her dog bed.

Blue’s New Fav

The Bostonista Beds are still the fav in our house and Blue has claimed the x-small bed as her own. At any point throughout the day – and night – you can find her cuddled up in it while looking out at the rest of the crew. Right now, it’s all about the puppies. The bed is situated right by the puppy pen so she lays in her perch and watches the pups with a maternal eye. She’s such a fabulous aunt!

The Yard Guard

Blue is the pack “yard guard”. The moment we open the back door to the deck, she lets out a bark as she runs to the far fence to fend off any possible intruders. That could be intruding leaves, wind, neighbor dogs, feral cats o of course, humans.

She will sit under the bushes at the fence line all afternoon if she could and you can bet that she will alert us to any movement in the yard, no matter the amount. Now that the puppies are out enjoying the backyard, she has taken her role in more seriously – She’s a great aunt to our pups!
