As usual with males, they recover quickly and that was the case with Georgie. He was up and running around within hours of being home.

KC on the other hand is taking a bit longer – as she should! Her incision is much bigger and the surgery is much more invasive!

She was back her perky self this morning and sweet Georgie hasn’t left her side!
The post Perfect Patients first appeared on Figgy's Chihuahuas AKC Show Breeder/Handler in Florida.

We were off to Lakeland today to see Dr. Rodgers – KC and Georgie are being retired to laps of luxury and today is the day of their surgeries! Georgie is getting to go see his daddy Beamer up in Rhode Island in the bestest home ever – Jane and Paul better get a bigger house because I will always have dogs to retire on their laps!!!!

They both did very well in their surgeries as well as the drive home. A lot of sleeping and resting is on the agenda for the next couple of days. If Georgie is anything like his dad he will be up and moving the moment we step foot in the door at home. KC is a heart doggy so I will spoil her rotten 😉

While waiting for them to come-to from anesthesia (which does take considerably longer than the actual surgery does!) I was able to explore the local Ross and boy oh boy did I find some fabulous deals! Dresses for $5.99 and $9.99. Nice dog show dresses!!! I will be styling this year in Brooksville!!

Teddy puppies are known for sugar drops around the age of 6 weeks. My first Teddy litter had all three girls crashing at 5 weeks of age – KC was the first! Now Milly is not a Teddy daughter but she is a KCee granddaughter and that is obviously where the hypoglycemia comes into play because Little Miss Sandy was the first to have a sugar drop in this litter – Followed by her sister Tini. I noticed they just weren’t “with it” as they were yesterday and with a check of the gums (white as a ghost they were) a dose of Nutri-Cal was administered. Luckily I caught it before Kayro Syrup was required. They both bounced back rather quickly and none of the boys ever crashed but you know we will be keeping an eye on them over the next couple of weeks. Thank you Terri for helping me tend to the girls!

We watched all of our dogs that attended the shows for any signs of hacking or running noses. Nope – We really thought we were in the clear! That was until Sunday night. Stella and Tino both started to hack and the plan for how we would proceed was devised. Quarantine! That’s the first step. Bets were placed that we had a case of good ol’ kennel cough and not the flu but until we were sure, we were not taking any chances.

All shows for the 21 days have been canceled. This coming weekend, we were supposed to be heading to Concord, NC for four all-breed shows and a speciality! We also have the four all-breed shows and two TBCC specialties two weekends after. All have been canceled. My dream of finishing Tino at the TBCC Speciality is out the window but his health is way beyond, more important! We will build another dream to get him finished! So now is the time for them to rest and get better!

Such a bittersweet day. My dear friend and most favorite veterinarian in the whole wide world Dr. Mario is leaving his practice and today was my last drive out to his office. I’ve made this drive a gazillion times over the last eight years. I could do it with my eyes closed! He is the most amazingly kind and professional vet I’ve ever worked with. I know he will be truly missed!

Today, Breezy, Tina, and Oops came along for the ride. Each came for their own special session with Doc. Oops came for his final set of puppy vaccines – He is going home next week! Perfect bill of health and sweet as ever to everyone in the office!

Breezy and Tino both required a bit more attention for their individual treatments – Like blood-work, a tad bit of shaving a bare spot and then sedation…

Breezy is finally getting her extremely long nails taken care of. It requires her to be sedated and the nails to be cut and then cauterized. She was the perfect patient and everything went perfectly! I am sure things will be much more comfortable for her now, specifically when she runs. This is one of the main reasons she has struggled in the show ring. The mat and concrete surfaces of the show sites are just too difficult for her with such long nails. They look beautiful now!!!

And Tino has some retained puppy teeth. This is actually quite typical for this line – The canines on the top and bottom always seem to take their own sweet time or they simply get stuck. He was such a trooper getting a total of 8 puppy teeth pulled but at the same time a typical male. After they drew blood, the girls wrapped his leg with tape. Pretty typical stuff right? Well, you would think they had cut it off and then seen it back on the way he was holding it up. Then it took him three times as long as Breezy to come to. He milked it the entire time! Such a boy!!

I knew something wasn’t right yesterday just by the look in Barbie’s face. Her eyes were trying to tell me from the moment that she woke up. I took her to the local vet with concerns of a high temperature and the lack of color in her face. Pyometria was my first thought so I asked for a blood work. I didn’t realize they had to send it out for results????? Waiting 24 hours for results? NO WAY! I headed to Lady Lake first thing in the morning and my thoughts were confirmed.

Once we got in there it was apparent that the breeding did in fact take. There were seven embryo sacks but two were seconds from rupturing. It appeared as though two of the sacks had already tried to self-heal, with what looked to be scar tissue attached to them. Once ruptured to get a sample for testing it was clear she was filled with infection. If they had ruptured she would’ve died for sure.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that we caught this I have followed my gut. Barbie has lived to tell the tale and live from this day forward as a spayed, happy and healthy girl.

Her mother KC has been at her side as she has become more more disoriented and scared. Clearly the pressure from the swelling in her brain is effecting her sight and her ability to find her food dish and water. It pained me more than you all ever know to see her in such distress and I knew I didn’t have the experience or the medications to help her. She needed prayers and an experience set of hands. A friend has offered her services as she has worked with hydrocephalic puppies in the past. KC seemed heartbroken as I packed Flint up – Let’s hope she will get to see her baby again soon!
