While the boys went to the vet to get their Health Certificates with their vaccines the girls received their vaccines here at home just as the entire litter did at 8 weeks of age. They are both staying here with us to be grown up and reevaluated later. Shelly and Tami came by to visit with the puppies are were more than happy to help administer the vaccines. Both girls did awesome, also with no reactions. Of course they ALL enjoyed the additional personal attention and playtime.

Not a single whine or whimper through all of the poking and prodding. I think if my back was turned that Coquito might not have made his way back into the doggy carrier to come home – He stole hearts big time!

And after a very thorough examination, Doc believes Olive might have strained her neck as apposed to bonking her head, which makes a heck of a lot of sense. She officially is large enough to receive her first set of puppy vaccines – YAHOO!!!!! But her visit to see Doc didn’t stop there… His gut keep telling him that Olive is just a tiny Chihuahua – but to rule things out, blood was drawn to do a thyroid test. We should get he results in a couple of days. Until then, we are just so happy that she is doing so well!

A day we have been planning for and anticipating for quite some time now has finally come and the outcome was quite amazing! First, the neutering of Teddy has been in the works for quite some time now. Holding him back from the most recent batch of girls in season was no easy task and finding a home that was willing to take on and love an older male than might mark was more difficult. Everything finally came together and that perfect home found us. Closing this chapter in our lives was a very difficult one to make, but for Teddy to get the life he has earned and beyond deserves, today had to come.

Father and Son did superbly with the surgery, handling the removal of their manhood with ease. Teddy was right back to his happy-go-lucky self around 30 minutes after his procedure while Stoli was a bit more knocked out for quite a bit longer than his good ol’ dad. He has reach the 7month mark and with all of the female hormones around here we want to make sure he doesn’t start lifting when he goes to his new forever home.

Tipsy came along for the adventure as well. Yes, we are still working on the whole socialization thing but she also needed her Rabies vaccine so she kept me and doc’s crew of Chihuahuas company while we waited for the boys to come out of recovery. She wants too keen on the whole “other dogs in the room” thing so she begged to get up most of the time. Go figure!

Today we headed out to Lady Lake for the puppies to get their final set of puppy vaccines and so Spike could get his rabies vaccine. On our last journey to the vet, Spike got car sick and threw up all over himself and the crate! That was an icky mess to clean up – and SMELL! I figured it was a one time thing. Being a single pup, he has some unique traits that I have always assumed to be because of it. His complete displeasure in being in a crate for more than an hour, making night time a less than quite time. After today’s adventure, I think our little Spikey is claustrophobic!

On the way to the vet, I could here the belly rumbles, vomiting and discomfort. I would pull over at gas stations to clean up the mess and calm him down, finally choosing to let him finish the ride on my daughter’s lap. Instantly, the anxiety and vomiting stopped and he rode out the journey in a much better way. The ride home we kept him on the lap and again, no issues. Poor little guy – You got it rough!

Spike came along for his final set so that he can partake in the weekend’s activities and he was also a real trooper. He only let out a couple of whimpers from inside the crate on the ride out to Lady Lake – and not a peep on the way home!

And since we are discussing vaccines, I thought I would mention for those that are unaware, Chihuahuas should not receive the non-core Corona or Leptospirosis vaccines as tiny puppies can have very serious reactions to them. Also, when your vet suggest that you have the Bordetella vaccine administered, ask for the injectable version. I have personally found that the intranasal vaccine actually creates a cough more times than not. Bordetella is kennel-cough, which if you board your dog or visit dog-friendly establishment frequently, I would recommend the vaccine. If not, I would pass.

With all vaccines, I would recommend watching your Chihuahua closely for any reactions. The stress can easily cause a sugar drop, which too can add to the seriousness of the situation. Be on the look out for lethargy, a decrease in appetite and mild vomiting or diarrhea after vaccines have be administered and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Other reactions I have personally seen after Rabies vaccine has been administered is swelling of the face and/or ears as well as hives and itching. Be sure to ask your vet to include injectable Benadryl and as I always suggest to Chihuahua owners, have a bottle of Children’s Benedryl in the medicine cabinet, just in case!
The post 2nd Set Done! first appeared on Figgy's Chihuahuas AKC Show Breeder/Handler in Florida.

Today was my scheduled vet appointment to get the girls their first set of vaccines and to get Suri’s day 61 pregnancy x-rays. when I woke to both KC and Kiki having wobbly-head, I knew they still were not adjusting well to the weaning process. Vaccines were out! There is no way they are strong enough to deal with vaccines! But a stool check and some blood work were on order and the results were exactly what we all guessed – Bacterial from the soft stools from the change in diet. Antibiotics were prescribed and every 4 hour feeds are in my future for the next couple of weeks.

I have had my fingers crossed for Suri that the Ted-Man’s multiple ties would help produce at least two puppies. She is only a sliver under 5 pounds and her pregnancy weight gain has been rather small. Two small puppies would be less dangerous and a LOT easier than one larger puppy! Unfortunately, I guess I should have had my toes crossed too because she only has one puppy brewing. It’s not single-puppy big but not a tiny one either. We are all saying prayers that her pelvis will allow the pup to be free whelped. It’s going to be a very tight fit!
The post Gonna Be An Interesting Week first appeared on Figgy's Chihuahuas AKC Show Breeder/Handler in Florida.
