And all I can say is Milly is one amazing free whelping momma! I really wasn’t too sure what to expect. With unsuccessful breeding and then a singleton I wasn’t sure if she inherited her mother and grandmother’s whelping genetics. Oh yeah she did! And then some!

She started to show signs of going into labor around 5:00pm. I figured I had a few hours before the pushing would start. She had eaten her food at 1:00pm so I assumed it would be an early morning arrival. I had a 6:00pm appointment so I left her in the peace and quite of the whelping room. To my surprise, when I returned at 8:00pm I was greeted by her first puppy already having been born, cleaned and she was nursing! (a girl weighing 4 ozs.) Milly was actually pushing out the next puppy as I walked into the room. It was from that point forward that I got to watch my very first “ALL BY HERSELF” whelping. I mean, she did EVERYTHING without my help! She was amazing!

Her second puppy was a boy, weighing in at 3.7 ozs.. She took a 45 minute break and then whelped the next two at the same time! Another boy (3.2 ozs.) and another girl! (2.6 ozs.) 36 minutes later her fifth puppy and third boy arrived – the biggest in the litter, he weighed in at 4.5 ozs. All five puppies here in just over an hour and a half. She’s was amazing!! And all of he puppies are doing fantastic. I assume she will be like her mom and grandma and grow them the outside. They always had uber-milk – Let’s see if she follows suit!
